Description

Section information text: This seminar explores the historical and cultural context of current political and military conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. We will examine issues of racial, ethnic, and religious identities in the region using academic sources, policy documents, and visual and oral narratives. Students will become familiar with the debates relating to ethnic and sectarian violence, forced migration, famine, and humanitarian aid through multi-disciplinary social science analysis and experiential case studies. The course combines delving into local and national circumstances for people living in the region and an interrogation of the objectives and practices of transnational actors.
