Description
This course will introduce students to inquiry, as a concept, and as a process. Students will also explore epistemology more generally in the process of developing their epistemological stance. An additional goal of this course will be to understand the theoretical and epistemological foundations of the Education Department's vision and commitment to community-engaged, practitioner and public scholarship. The goal of this course is that by the end of the semester students will be conversant in a range of critical qualitative methodologies and have a toolkit from which to draw upon as they move through the doctoral process. Specifically students will explore the rich terrain of research design, data collection and analysis, and to bring an informed eye to the reading of anticolonial, critical, and humanizing research in education. This analysis will focus primarily on the historical relationship between marginalized cultures and the concept of scientific research and epistemology. This critique will inform our approaches to socially engaged scholarship that employs research methods to move us toward social justice in education.
