Description
This course is designed to prepare aspiring History and Social Science teachers in Massachusetts to develop pedagogy and assessment practices aligned with the Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks, the History and Social Science Content Standards, and the Massachusetts Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP). The course emphasizes the distinctive ways of knowing in History, including historical inquiry, sourcing, contextualization, corroboration, and evidence-based argumentation, as well as the use of compelling and supporting questions grounded in disciplinary standards. Through analysis of curriculum materials, instructional design, and assessment practices, candidates will examine how teachers support students in engaging with historical content and in thinking, reading, and writing like historians and social scientists. Candidates will be expected to design lessons, assessments, and learning experiences that reflect the expectations of the Massachusetts frameworks, demonstrate alignment with CAP essential elements, and respond to the diverse academic, cultural, and linguistic strengths of students. Emphasis is placed on equitable, standards-based instruction that prepares K-12 learners to engage critically with the past and present while meeting professional expectations for licensure in History and Social Science in Massachusetts.
