Description

This course prepares teacher candidates to deliver systematic, explicit writing instruction in grades K-5, fully aligned with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Mass Literacy Guide Framework. Grounded in the cognitive science of writing, this course treats writing as an essential, higher-order literacy component deeply intertwined with reading comprehension and language development. Candidates will master methods for teaching transcription skills (handwriting, encoding, and spelling) alongside text generation (sentence-level syntax and paragraph structure). Participants will design structured literacy blocks featuring guided and independent writing opportunities, data-driven individual conferencing, and culturally responsive feedback. Special focus is given to using high-quality curricular materials, leveraging assistive technology, and developing cross-curricular, knowledge-building writing practices for all learners, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
