Description

A first-year seminar (it can also be offered as an elective scientific perspective) designed to transform students from passive consumers of information into active scientific citizens. Using Worcester, MA, as our primary laboratory (we will also look at other examples beyond Worcester), we explore the science of the "Heart of the Commonwealth." This course offers an immersive, scientific exploration of Worcester, Massachusetts, using the city itself as a living laboratory. By examining the intersection of natural systems and urban infrastructure, students will investigate how scientific principles shape the daily lives of Worcester's residents. We will trace the city's evolution from its industrial roots to its emergence as a leader in biotechnology and green innovation, focusing on the challenges and triumphs of building a resilient community. This will help students realize that science is not out there in the textbooks but in the communities that they live. The historical aspects of the city as it interacts with science will be explored. Guest speakers where possible from around the city of Worcester will give insights to the various topics. Students will be exposed to global scientific issues that affect communities. Students will be required to apply the knowledge learned in this course to analyze and write a paper on the scientific state of their home town environments.
