Description

This seminar provides an in-depth exploration of ecocide-the large-scale destruction of the environment by human beings. Drivers of ecocide examined in the course include case studies of war, capitalist development, global food production, energy generation, as well as our own everyday actions. Through these case studies, students will critically examine the origins, definitions, and implications of ecocide, as well as consider its relationship to environmental crime and justice. Students will also engage with debates on enforcement challenges, and the role activism plays in advancing ecocide accountability for humans and non-humans alike. The interdisciplinary course draws from green criminology, international law, history, and the humanities to analyze how ecocide is conceptualized and contested in contemporary society.
