Description
This course will explore the role of organizations in the lives of Black Americans across time and space. We will investigate the ways axes of social identity, including class, gender, sexuality, and skin tone, have influenced the composition, development, and goals of Black organizations. In discussing and researching the continuities and differences among Black organizations in the United States, we will be able to understand and analyze the interplay between Black agency and social structure-the various ways Black Americans have used organizations to forge community and resist oppression. Ultimately, the course highlights the organizational processes underlying both inter-racial and intra-racial inequalities.
