Description

Social policy-defined as the measures societies take to respond to conditions of social need and distress-has significant effects on individuals' daily lives as well as humans' collective capacities to solve problems. This course examines how social policy is influenced by cultural and moral frameworks. The assumptions that societies make about people and communities, often based on their gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, social class, and more, condition how leaders and elites identify problems, formulate responses, and implement policy measures. Students will learn about how key cultural assumptions and moral judgments develop, how policymakers employ them to achieve desired goals, how social movements contest them, and how specific policies that matter today are rooted in enduring cultural hierarchies and moral boundaries. Specific policy areas to be covered include welfare and poverty, incarceration, health care, and technology and artificial intelligence.
