Description

We will begin with a discussion and history of the body in social thought and discourse. From there we will address what a body is, what effect the body has on knowledge production, the formation of a self, how the body frames our social experiences and how the body is affected by social structures like medicine, culture, politics, education and science. The second half of the course will focus on the body as a site of social discourses. We will also explore the sociological meanings and effects of body modifications like tattooing and plastic surgery. Fair Warning: This class will explore sociological issues regarding the body and body modification. As a consequence, we will be viewing a number of films and images of bodies and certain modification practices. It is difficult, if not impossible to explore the cultural practices of a/the body and bodily modification practices without the visual references. Some of these images will be graphic. If you agree to stay in this class, you also agree to view these images. If you are uncomfortable with images of the body and body modification processes, then I would suggest you withdraw from this course.
