Description
What is humanitarian action and why does it matter in international relations? Why do some humanitarian disasters receive more international attention than others? Why are some states able to militarily intervene in others, but some states cannot? Why do some humanitarian disasters persist for decades, while others get resolved? How do scholars in International Relations think about these questions? This seminar is designed to help students find tools to conduct in-depth research into these and related questions in the international humanitarian field. It starts with an examination of various humanitarian traditions, and continues to an analysis of how history, power, privilege, identity, and globalization have shaped concepts and practices of humanitarian action. We will then analyze specific cases that help us to concretize each of these issues. Students will conclude this seminar with the completion of a research paper that explores these and related questions. (IR)
