Description
How do dictatorships become democracies, and vice versa? What are the challenges facing countries emerging from repressive rule and transitioning to democracy? What challenges threaten to undermine and destabilize long-standing democracies? Using firsthand accounts, historical analyses and contemporary films, this course explores the role of grassroots movements, political and social elites and the international context in struggles to create and sustain democracy as well as the forces that threaten it. Employing a comparative approach, the course will focus both on contemporary transitions from totalitarian and authoritarian regimes as well as on recent patterns of democratic backsliding in Europe and Latin America.
