Description

This class introduces philosophical theories of emotion. We will discuss the role emotions play in character and in moral motivation. And we will take a closer look at individual emotions such as empathy, anger, shame, and disgust. Questions discussed include: What is an emotion? What makes it rational or appropriate? What role does moral theory ascribe to emotions? When do emotions support moral action and when are they a hindrance to it?
