Description
Fascism is one of the most debated concepts in history and politics. This course examines both, the different historical faces of fascism and its current rise around the globe. Regional examples will include Italy, Germany, Japan, Argentina, and the United States. We will discuss core issues of fascist ideologies and its roots and fascist movements and their social bases, and how fascist governments came into being, the resistance they faced, and why they eventually failed. Other authoritarian, populist, and alt-right movements will be considered as well to decipher differences between seemingly similar movements and gain insights into the choices individuals and groups took when accommodating or opposing them. We will also compare how the concept of “fascism” has been used to comprehend or distort the complexity of political developments in the past and in the present.
