Description

According to historian Robin DG Kelley, "love and imagination may be the most revolutionary impulses available to us, and yet we have failed to understand their political importance and respect them as powerful social forces." Building on Kelley's analysis, this course traces African American imaginative practices to attain freedom rights in the face of oppressive policing, state violence, and individual and organized acts of terror. It explores the symbiotic relationship between artistic practices- visual, performative, poetic, and musical - and activist theories and tactics within the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Freedom Struggle, Women's Liberation, and the Prison Abolition Movement. Students will read poets, such as Audre Lorde, analyze plays by Langston Hughes and Amiri Baraka, and discuss essays by black theorists, such as James Baldwin and Angela Davis. All the while, they will consider how artist-activists, like Emory Douglass, found inspiration from the music of John Coltrane and songs of Nina Simone in their struggle to build a world free from the oppressive forces that deprived them "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
