Description

This seminar examines how the history of mass violence is taught outside of the classroom through the lens of material culture and public history. Within the course, students explore the theories and methodologies of material culture studies, and how to rely on material culture as a source base. Using a series of conflicts such as the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide, students consider how other societies have grappled with the public display of traumatic history. While global in scope, the class also includes a project where students explore one local site of memory that exhibits the history of war and/or violence. By the end of the semester, students will have developed an idea of how material culture and public history shape the collective memory of past conflicts.
