Description
HIST 162 - The Modern Middle East From the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Arab Spring protests, the political landscape of the Middle East continues to shift in unpredictable and catastrophic ways. In this course, students will explore the rise of the modern Middle East from the Ottoman Empire to the Arab Spring. The seeds of today's conflicts were shaped by Ottoman conquest in 1453 and later European imperialism with the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. The course will cover these moments, including the creation of modern nation states motivated by imperialism and the insatiable quest for oil. Major themes include the emergence of revolutionary nationalism among Armenians, Arabs, Kurds and Turks before and after World War I, ethnic cleansing and genocide against various peoples of the region; as well as the rise of Zionism and the struggle of Palestinians (and other peoples of the region) for self-determination and statehood. The course finishes with the grassroots Arab Spring protests, the Syrian Revolution, and ongoing political events. Course will consist of background lectures and discussion of primary source materials (documents, novels, and memoirs).
