Description
This course will explore Indigenous history in North America from before the arrival of Europeans to the continent through the conclusion of the "Plains Wars" in 1890. Throughout the course, students will critically examine narratives of American history that center European colonizers and learn nuanced and varied Indigenous perspectives. The class will also investigate the different responses Indigenous people had to colonial invasion. In keeping with themes that many Native American scholars emphasize, this course will focus on Indigenous peoples' relationships with the land and Europeans' violent and often fraudulent seizure of that land. Topics include: colonialism; agency and resistance; violence and erasure; the American Revolution; the Civil War
