Description
Section information text: This course examines the evolution of Jewish life in Europe between the age of the Spanish expulsion in the sixteenth century to the age of emancipation in the twentieth. Throughout this period, European Jews not only transformed the meaning of Jewish religious experience and expression, but participated fully in the creation of modern Europe. Examining a variety of primary sources, ranging from Hasidic parables to the writings of Sigmund Freud, we will explore critical issues that animate the writing of European and Jewish history, including the development of the reforming state and civil society, the spread of capitalism and technological change, the impact of nationalism, the explostion of vernacular literature and mass culture, and the challenge of scientific discovery.
